The situation remains volatile in the Democratic Republic of Congo where M23 rebels backed by neighbouring Rwanda have captured the city of Goma in the mineral-rich east. Explosions and intense gunfire were heard in the city throughout the last 24 hours. Clashes erupted between the rebels and the DR Congo army, killing at least 17 people and injuring over 300 as per reports. Kigali says five civilians have also died in Rwanda. Several DRC soldiers have surrendered and fled into neighbouring Rwanda. Rwanda has shared videos showing the surrendered Congolese troops. Meanwhile, Kenyan President William Ruto, the chair of the East African Community says the presidents of Rwanda and DR Congo Paul Kagame and Felix Tshisekedi will attend an emergency summit on Wednesday (January 29).
